Texas AG Ken Paxton fires back at critics over claims he fled home to avoid subpoena Sep 27, 2022 Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton defended himself against reports that he fled his home to avoid being subpoenaed in a case about abortion rights on Monday, claiming that his response was out of concern for his family's safety. The Texas Tribune obtained court documents claiming Paxton avoided interaction with a process server on Monday morning, who presented a subpoena regarding a lawsuit about nonprofits potentially paying for out-of-state abortions for Texans. Paxton was ordered to attend the court hearing, which is part of a lawsuit launched by nonprofits in the wake of Texas strengthening anti-abortion laws amid the overturn of Roe v. Wade. In a response posted to Twitter on Monday night, Paxton called the article "a complete waste of time" and said the media "should be ashamed". Paxton maintained that he thought the process server was a stranger "lingering" outside his house and was concerned for his family's well-being. The attorney general also argued that the article was an orchestrated attempt to "drum up" controversy about him. "They’re attacking me for having the audacity to avoid a stranger lingering outside my home and showing concern about the safety and well-being of my family," he said. According to the Texas Tribune report, the process server told Paxton's wife, State Senator Angela Paxton, that he was serving the documents after ringing their doorbell. She said her husband was on the phone and unable to come to the door. More than an hour later, Paxton left his house and narrowly avoided interaction with the process server, who was still attempting to speak with him. Angela Paxton reportedly followed, and the couple left in the same vehicle. The process server, Ernesto Martin Herrera, maintains that he clearly said he had court documents for Paxton, and claims Paxton ran to a truck and ignored him. "They came out and said that civilians will be responding to non-emergency calls that come in through 911." NEW ORLEANS ON PACE TO HAVE ONE OF THE HIGHEST MURDER RATES IN THE WORLD IN 2022 "The problem with that is within the last year, NOPD received over 100 calls for first-degree rape, first-degree rape being the most serious rape in Louisiana, carrying a mandatory life sentence, and they classified those as non-emergency," she continued. "So that should be alarming to people to think that a case or a call that comes in for something serious could be classified as non-emergency." The department, which lost 150 officers last year alone, is expected to hire civilians to fill administrative roles, alongside several dozen others who will be responding to "non-emergency" 911 calls.  Some will even act as trained detectives to allow for more officers to patrol the city streets.  The NOPD is also even scaling back its requirements to join the civilian program, overlooking low credit scores and prior marijuana use.  "As a former prosecutor, I can tell you I would not want a civilian deciding whether or not the collection of evidence required a warrant or whether or not they had permission to take certain evidence or how to collect it to protect what we call the chain of custody in the preservation of evidence, so you can present it in trial when it eventually goes to trial," Rodrigue said.  "Now we're just going to have random people off the street collecting evidence," she continued. "Who knows how they'll be trained to collect the evidence, but it's either that or we have somebody who's allowed to report to work high on drugs. This is what we've been left with." During an appearance on CNBC's "Squawk Box," Siegel criticized Powell for downplaying inflation throughout 2021 and overreacting to it now.  "All of a sudden, what's caused him to change his mind… a year ago when everything was booming he said inflation was no threat," Siegel said. "Honestly, Chairman Powell, I think should offer the American people an apology for such poor monetary policy that he's pursued, and the Fed has pursued over the last two years," he continued. INVESTOR SENTIMENT ‘UNQUESTIONABLY’ AT WORST LEVEL SINCE 2008 FINANCIAL CRISIS: BANK OF AMERICA Siegel's grievance is that the Federal Reserve did not raise interest rates when the economy was stronger in 2021, and is now raising them when the economy is declining. He argued that the Fed should have acknowledged inflation was a problem and raised rates sooner.  "They kept on pouring money in, commodities kept on going up, we didn't see the dollar soaring like we did now," Siegel said.  "The Fed's tightening and their talk of super tightening has just pushed markets way too extreme," he continued. GLOBAL ECONOMY HEADED FOR PERVASIVE SLOWDOWN AMID ENERGY, INFLATION CRISES: OECD "A year ago in September, they said no inflation was a problem at all," Siegel said. Siegel also pointed out that real wages have fallen due to out of control inflation.  "It seems to me wrong for Powell to say we're going to crush wage increases, we're gonna crush the worker, that's not the cause of the inflation. The cause of inflation was excessive monetary accommodation over the last two years, don't shift the blame now to the worker, crush the worker, and say that's what we have to do to control the inflation. Wrong solution," he argued. The stock market tumbled last week amid the Fed's decision to raise interest rates by 75 basis points in order to curb inflation and fears of further economic decline. Persistent inflation has caused the Fed to take a stronger stance in favor of steadily raising interest rates, which will slow the economy. It would be the biggest news story in the country. But what if he said he killed a "Republican extremist?" We can now say that this version of the story is met with media crickets.  Cayler Ellingson is dead. Allegedly he was run over and left to die by Shannon Brandt. Although details of the tragedy are sketchy and still emerging, one thing is clear. Brandt invoked Joe Biden’s new favorite phrase "Republican extremist," to justify his actions.  Only one of two things can be the case here. Either Brandt did believe Ellingson was a Republican extremist and therefore a fair target for killing, or he thought that in today’s society that excuse when talking to the authorities would have purchase and credibility. After all, if these people are destroying the country and the very fabric of democracy as the president claims, why aren’t they fair targets.  JEN PSAKI SAYS DEMOCRATS KNOW 'THEY WILL LOSE' IF MIDTERMS ARE A REFERENDUM ON PRESIDENT BIDEN A competent news media that was serving the public interest would be holding the White House’s feet to the fire after the president’s own rhetoric, literally word for word, was used by an alleged killer to excuse vehicular homicide. Mind you, this is the same news media that believes Donald Trump started a coup because he used the term, "fight" in a political sense. This is the same media that sets its hair on fire if a Republican uses the image of a target in a political ad. So why is Biden getting a hall pass for ratcheting up division and anger in a way directly tied to violence?  Their likely excuse, built on a foundation of lies, would be that while right-wing political violence is the greatest terror threat facing America, left-wing political violence is rare, just isolated incidents. The George Floyd riots weren’t political violence that killed people, left city blocks aflame and weren’t arguably the worst political violence since the 1960s, they were just peaceful protests. Attacks on dozens of pregnancy centers which offer alternatives to abortion, complete with an organization called "Jane’s Revenge" not only taking credit, but promising more, are no big deal, certainly not worth spilling precious progressive journalistic ink over. Less than a month ago in these pages I warned that President Joe Biden’s dangerous rhetoric, calling American citizens semi-fascists, and MAGA extremists was very likely to lead to political violence. And here we are. Biden says he is not talking about all Republicans when he uses this inflammatory language, but his words and that of his party show this just isn’t true. In bemoaning the beliefs of these "MAGA" types, what do the president and Sen. Chuck Schumer point to? Opposing abortion, willingness to change Social Security and Medicare, and refusal to sign on to big-spending packages. These are not MAGA Republican positions, they are just Republican positions and always have been. What is shocking and amazing is that the president of the United States won’t walk back this dangerous political tactic even as it leads to violence. Biden was already a failed president before he entered his stark and divisive Philadelphia speech bathed in an angry black and red, today he is also a dangerous president. The legacy he seems most likely to leave is one of tearing our country apart while setting off division and hatred. It is already happening.
